Obama blasts Arizona immigration bill – ABC News Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
US president Barack Obama has attacked a controversial Arizona immigration bill which civil rights activists say will lead to racial profiling.
Mr Obama is coming under increasing pressure to make good on a promise to overhaul immigration law in America.
The Latino community has been outraged at a new bill in Arizona that requires people to carry their alien registration documents at all times and gives police broader powers to question suspected illegal immigrants.
Mr Obama calls it misguided.
“I’ve instructed members of my administration to closely monitor the situation and examine the civil rights and other implications of this legislation,” he said.
Some in Congress are saying the proposed state law is unconstitutional.
Mr Obama says the federal government must act on the immigration issue to avoid “irresponsibility by others”.
All of this boycott Arizona stuff makes my blood boil. Yeah, let’s punish Arizona business and citizens because politicians are idiots.
